Earth Science For Earth Day
Watch amateur paleontologist Katharine Snavely clean an ancient dinosaur bone. Volunteer to help out and she'll show you how it's done. Taste a mineral sample. Its flavor can help you to identifying it. Drop a rock in water. If it floats, you know it is pumice. It's all about Earth at Earth Science For Earth Day at the Science Museum of Virginia, Sunday, 22 Apr 2007, 11:30am - 4:00pm.
Look for Snavely and the dinosaur bone fossils in the Bone Zone, 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Scratch a mineral with your fingernail. Any mark from the scratch helps you identify the mineral. Drag a mineral along a surface. The mark it leaves helps you name the mineral. Folks from the American Chemical Society show you how taste and water also help you identify minerals, 11:30am - 4:00pm. Peruse collections gathered by members of the Richmond Gem and Mineral Society. Pick up recycling tips from the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority. Find out about environmental friendly cleaning from the folks at UNICCO Service Company.
While you're at the Science Museum, look for Carpenter Science Theatre Company actors telling science stories in The Very Best of CSTC Storytelling at 1:00pm and 2:00pm. Listen to the Live! At Broad Street Station performance of the Lee-Davis High School Jazz Band, 1:30pm - 2:15pm.
