Boost! 30 Day Initiative

This summer the Museum has challenged the community to boost their happiness, knowledge, strength and beyond through its newest permanent exhibition, Boost!

With everything from walking a tightrope to composing your own music, Boost! makes improving yourself easy and fun…but how do you keep that momentum in your daily life? By creating our very own 30 Day Initiative, we’ve found a way to continue boosting our summer for those days that you can’t make it to the Museum.

We’ve come up with a variety of fun and healthy challenges to help you Boost! your lifestyle…because how can you know what makes you happiest and healthiest unless you try a variety things? So try something new with us!

Day 1: Boost! your flexibility: Stretch for 15 minutes this morning!


Stretching reduces stress and eases muscle pain, as well as increases blood flow to your muscles. Want to test your newfound flexibility? Come try Shrink to Fit in Boost! and see how compact you can make your body.

Day 2: Boost! your strength: Ride your bike to the store!


Bicycling is a great cardio exercise that also builds muscle and relieves stress. dd the fact that it’s easy on your body and joints and – even better – it burns calories. So check your tires, put on your bike helmet and go for a ride!

Day 3: Boost! your curiosity: How many constellations can you name in tonight's night sky?


Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Mae Jemesen are just a few people that were inspired by things they saw when they looked up into the night sky, what do you see when you look up? 

Day 4: Boost! your fun: Get active and try hula hooping!


It’s not only a lot of fun but a calorie-torcher, too! Hula hooping for 30 minutes burns 150-250 calories – if you kept this up for at least 3 days a week you would lose 3 to 6 inches all over your body in a month!

Day 5: Boost! your brain power: Complete a crossword puzzle.


Regularly working on crossword puzzles not only sharpens your thinking skills, improves your vocabulary and boosts your trivia knowledge but increases your happiness as well! 

Day 6: Boost! your happiness: Ride a horse!


Horse riding improves blood circulation and respiration – as well as posture! By adjusting to the constant movement you will condition various muscle groups, increase joint mobility and develop a greater alertness to your surroundings.

Day 7: Boost! your lunch break: Take a 20 minute walk during your lunch hour.


Going for a brief walk after eating can have a huge impact on your blood sugar levels. Exercise can help control the blood sugar spikes you experience after meals – get that glucose out of your blood with a scenic walk!

Day 8: Boost! your appreciation: Listen to a new artist today!


Did you know that listening to music can improve your physical health? Not only does it reduce stress, help you be more alert and increase overall happiness, but it can also reduce pain perception!

Day 9: Boost! your altruism: Do something nice for a stranger.


Being nice to a stranger actually has some measurable impacts. Random acts of kindness have positive physiological and physical reproductions. Don't forget the individual happiness combines to form the overall happiness, let's spread some smiles around!

Day 10: Boost! your sleep: Get a good solid 8 hours of sleep tonight!


A good night’s sleep is important to both your physical and mental health. It can do everything from reducing your risk of infection to boosting your ability to think clearly and concentrate - and that’s just the beginning! 

Day 11: Boost! your balance: Jump on a pogo stick!


Strengthen your core muscles and improve your balance by jumping on a pogo stick. Using a pogo stick is a form of cardio exercise where you build leg muscles and back muscles while having fun!

Day 12: Boost! your culinary chops: Replace 2 items in your favorite meal with nutritious alternatives.


Follow the rule of three – one protein, one starch, and one vegetable for your meal. Replacing french fries with a sweet potato or white rice with a side of fruit salad will leave you feeling full and energized!

Day 13: Boost! your skills: Teach yourself to juggle!


In 1666 Isaac Newton shared the concepts of gravity with the world…in 2013 you can use this knowledge to temporarily defy gravity as you fling objects back and forth using your hands and gravitational patterns. Give it a try!

Day 14: Boost! your happiness – start reading a really good book!


Take some time for yourself, curl up in a comfy chair and read! Reading is relaxing and mentally stimulating at the same time – it’s almost like taking a mini-vacation, leaving you refreshed and happy!

Day 15: Boost! your fitness: Take the stairs!


Studies suggest that engaging in an active lifestyle approach – like climbing the stairs – may be just as beneficial as a structured exercise routine. Tone your muscles, help lower your heart rate over time and burn calories, one step at a time!

Day 16: Boost! your game time: Play a board game with your friends or family.


Create stronger social connections, relieve stress and learn new skill sets at the same time! For adults, games can help reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease – so no matter what age you are, go play!

Day 17: Boost! your nutrition: Replace soda with a tasty blended fruit smoothie.


Be your own chemist and take charge in the kitchen with your blender and some yummy fruits and vegetables. These healthy concoctions can be full of the fruits and vegetables you may not like so much – disguise the taste with some low fat yogurt or teaspoon of vanilla extract!

Day 18: Boost! your agility: Get active and jump rope!


Did you know that if done properly, jump roping actually creates less impact on your joints than jogging? This activity is good for your heart, strengthens both your upper and lower body, and burns a lot of calories in a short amount of time!

Day 19: Boost! your knowledge: Learn another language.


You don’t have to master a second (or third!) language to reap the benefits – even attempting to learn a new language exercises more communication channels in your brain than normal, helping prevent memory loss and delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Day 20: Boost! your moves: Learn a new dance today!


Improve your coordination, speed up your reaction time, tone muscles and strengthen your lungs by dancing! Dance is also a deeply rooted aspect of various cultures, so take the chance to learn about the world and stay fit all at the same time.  

Day 21: Boost! your diversity: Learn how to play a new musical instrument.


Don’t have any previous experience playing music? Anyone can teach themselves the basics of some instruments! Learn to play Chopsticks on your note-labeled piano keys or use the internet to teach you how to play some simple guitar solos!

Day 22: Boost! your happiness: Grab a coloring book and a big box of crayons – and color!


Playing is something we are wired for as humans, so no matter what age you are – go play! Exercise your imagination, brush up on your creativity and reduce stress with this simple and fun activity.

Day 23: Boost! your abilities: Step up to the plate and visit a batting cage.


Improve your hand eye coordination, reaction time, strength and joint flexibility with this recreational activity. Bring your friends along and try it out together!

Day 24: Boost! your palate: Try a new fruit or vegetable today!


Just because you’ve never heard of it, doesn’t mean it won’t be a delicious snack! Give your taste buds a healthy shock and experience something new. Who knows? Kumquat may become a staple in your diet before long!

Day 25: Boost! your fun: Get active and play hop scotch!


Hopscotch – it’s not just for kids! It boosts your balance and your strength – just watch your leg muscles get stronger the more you play!

Day 26: Boost! your originality: Make a work of art using your medium of choice.


The Mona Lisa, Star Wars, The War of The Worlds and the statue of David are all really infamous works of art.  You don't need a canvas and paint to be the next visionary artist…experiment with new mediums like cherries, staples or old jackets. Get creative!

Day 27: Boost! your appreciation: Check out your local orchestra, art museum, theater, museum, etc.


Relax, recharge and enjoy yourself at a local cultural center, like the Museum! Participating in community events can increase your satisfaction, lower anxiety and boost your knowledge – so find a new place that interests you and explore!

Day 28: Boost! your routine: Instead of simply walking to your destination, try dance walking!


Not a fan of working out? No need to join a gym to experience some good old fashioned exercise. Dance walking is a new trend – don’t take our word for it, check this out

Day 29: Boost! your creativity: Join a theater production – no acting required.


Get active – without breaking a sweat! Join with theatre groups, like the Museum’s Carpenter Science Theatre Company, and increase your overall mental health. Fight depression, lower your anxiety and have fun at the same time!

Day 30: Boost! your spontaneity: Try something you’ve never done before!


Trying something new is good for you and your brain. Short bouts of new activity causes the body and mind do things it has never done thus ushering in new neural connections.  So try something new – it’s good for you!
