The Ethyl Corporation IMAX®DOME & Planetarium
The Ethyl Corporation IMAX®DOME & Planetarium is a part of the Science Museum of Virginia, located in Richmond's historic Broad Street Station at 2500 West Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia, 23220. It has a tilted hemispherical projection dome, 23 meters in diameter and almost 5 stories tall. This dome is tilted at a 27 degree angle and has a 40% reflectivity. The theater opened April 23, 1983 and seats 250.
Within the Ethyl IMAX®DOME & Planetarium is an projection system manufactured by the IMAX® Corporation of Canada.
The Ethyl IMAX®DOME & Planetarium also houses a Digistar®II planetarium system. This system, from the Evans & Sutherland Corporation, uses a Sun Microsystems SPARCstation 10 computer and Evans & Sutherland graphics system to project the stars, planets and moons of our solar system, and other monochromatic, wire frame computer graphics. The Digistar®II system was installed in January 1997 to replace the original Digistar®I system, the world's first permanently installed Digistar® system.
Daily (except Thanksgiving and Christmas) showings of large format films and planetarium shows (except during changeover periods) are offered in the Ethyl IMAX®DOME & Planetarium.
