Tails and scales, hats and staffs, science and fun!

It’s just what it sounds like: a special, one-night-only event packed with hands-on activities about lizards and wizards!

We decided this Science After Dark wouldn’t just have one theme, it would have two. Not only is the entire Science Museum open late for all your exploration needs, including the touring exhibition Discover Steampunk, there will also be special programming about topics related to lizards and wizards.

Learn about reptile camouflage, adaptations and nutrition. Create your own pet lizard using Shrinky Dinks and see what’s in a lizard’s lunchbox. Plus, visit our Animal Lab and see if you can identify all our different resident lizards.

Every great wizard needs a wand. Make your very own magical tool in The Forge. Watch objects change color and educators concoct special potions. Is it magic? No, it’s science, of course! Our Van de Graaff generator will be out, too, so you can see if the bolts produced are as powerful as a wizard’s lightning.

How can Science Museum astronomers use scientific wizardry to learn the universe’s secrets? Find out in The Dome. During the custom live astronomy shows, explore the intersection between the cosmos and Earth’s ancient reptiles—the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs—and the lessons it can teach us.

Whether you’re more into sorcerers or snakes, Mauritius geckos or mages, we’ll have plenty to ensure your night is truly magical!

Admission

Science After Dark admission is $17 for adults; $14 for youth (ages 6–12) and seniors (ages 60 and older) and $10 for preschool-aged children (ages 3–5). Science After Dark admission is free for Science Museum members, children under 2, educators, military and college students with a valid ID.
