Guess what’s back! Back again. Science on Tap. Tell your friends …

Yes, that’s right. The wildly popular, adults-only Science on Tap events are back! And we’re kicking things off with a night of retrofuturistic science fun with Science on Tap: STEMpunk. So lace up your corsets, dust off your top hat and read on for everything you need to know about what promises to be a nanty narking event! (that’s Victorian speak for great fun!)

What’s Happening?

To start with, all Science Museum exhibitions will be open, including the touring exhibition Discover Steampunk. But then we’re going to program almost every inch of the place with STEMpunk science activities, such as:

  • Digging into electricity with our Van de Graaff, snap circuits and a conductive play dough group build.
  • Creating your own fashion in The Forge. Who can make the best steampunk-inspired goggles?
  • Decoding secret messages using Morse code. We can’t say more. It’s a secret.
  • Embracing your inner child by playing a giant Operation game or working to connect the circuit with friends. We promise, this has ties to steampunk.
  • Taking a shareable selfie or group picture in our themed photo op.
  • Blasting off into space with our astronomer/science nerd dynamic duo. Who knows what they will talk about. We can’t control them.
  • Learning about Victorian debauchery from our blush-inducing historian friend, Jim Blow. If you’ve seen his talks before, you know.
  • Showing off your sick facial hair or extravagant steampunk costume in our contests. These are separate events, but if you have both, you’re winning at life.

For sustenance, our friends from River City Wood Fire and Sammich RVA will be here. Bars will offer canned beer and wine and we’ll have a signature cocktail to reward you for making it to Level 3! Non-alcoholic drinks, candy and popcorn will also be available at concessions.

Who Can Come?

Anyone who is 21+ who wants to have an awesome time, get hands-on with science, explore the Science Museum in a kids-free environment and isn’t afraid of ravens, plague doctors or grown-up humor. Please note that even if you intend to enjoy the evening sans adult beverage, you still need to be 21 and you must bring your ID.

What’s the Attire?

It’s up to you if you want to dress the theme or not. We will end the night with a costume contest (with prizes!), so going all out is encouraged. Steampunk outfits tend to blend modern/futuristic style with influences from Victorian Britain such as corsets, waistcoats, military jackets and top hats. Pinterest has lots of inspiration.

The most important thing is to keep your nuts and bolts covered but don’t cover your face and don't bring any replica/prop weapons!

How Do I Get Tickets?

Tickets for Science on Tap are available online only. One more time for those in the back: we will not sell tickets at Guest Services for this event.

This event is capped and we expect it to sell out, so be sure you purchase your tickets early.

Two types of tickets are available:

  • Early access tickets are $25 for the general public and $20 for Science Museum members. These tickets grant you access to the Science Museum and bars at 5:30 p.m., 30 minutes ahead of everyone else. Science Museum exhibitions will be open, but themed programming does not begin until 6 p.m. Only 150 early access tickets are available.
  • Regular admission tickets are $20 for the general public and $15 for Science Museum members. These tickets grant you access to the Science Museum at 6 p.m.

Drink tickets will be for sale at the event for $3 per ticket. Two tickets will be required for beer or wine. Three tickets will be required for a signature cocktail. Food can be purchased at food trucks or concessions at your leisure. All event and drink ticket sales are final.
