Humans are engaged in an exciting journey of exploration and discovery in space. The environment of space presents many challenges, but engineers are working to make traveling to and through space safer, faster and cheaper. It is no longer a question of if humans will reach Mars, but when.

Using hands-on and large-scale interactive exhibits and multimedia components, Space: An Out-of-Gravity Experience explores the solutions that will shape our future in space. This touring exhibition gives you a glimpse of the challenges and triumphs of space journeys, and the extraordinary conditions of human space travel.

Witness the innovation that makes life possible in the unforgiving vacuum of space. Explore conditions that make space travel dangerous. Experience what it’s like to be on board the International Space Station. Try out some of the engineering technology that makes life and research possible in space. Answer some of your burning questions about space exploration: How do astronauts sleep in a weightless environment? How do they eat? And how do they go to the bathroom?

Unlike many traditional space exhibitions that focus on the history of space travel, Space: An Out-of-Gravity Experience looks into current and future exploration. Discover what is possible, and what awaits in orbit and beyond.

Space: An Out-of-Gravity Experience will require an additional exhibition ticket. It was designed and developed by the Science Museum of Minnesota in partnership with the International Space Station Office of NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Additional Programming

The Dome
We’ve added two new astronomy shows for the summer to help you explore the vastness of space on the largest screen in Virginia. Bonus: each includes a live journey through the cosmos with a Science Museum astronomer! Please note: Dome features require an additional ticket.

  • Astronaut: Ocean to Orbit reveals the high-tech ways NASA uses subaquatic environments to mimic life and work in space.
  • We Are Guardians looks at how ecosystems are intrinsically connected, and with the increasing use of satellite monitoring, examines the links between human activities and climate change.

The Forge

Celebrate innovation by rolling up your sleeves to get hands on with out-of-this-world Maker Workshops and Maker Challenges. Programming in The Forge is included with admission. Advance registration is required for Maker Workshops.

  • June Maker Workshop: Home Hydroponics
  • July Maker Challenge: Orbiting Objects
  • August Maker Challenge: Celestial Clocks
  • August Maker Workshop: DIY Dipper
