Up & Atom

The Science Museum of Virginia's annual Up & Atom Women's Leadership Breakfast historically brings together 500 women from the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, community leaders and enthusiastic advocates to both celebrate the impact of the Science Museum of Virginia and to celebrate women in science.

Now in its twelfth year, this one-hour fundraising initiative features a complimentary continental breakfast, keynote remarks and a call to action to support the Museum's efforts to engage youth - especially girls - in informal science education opportunities that foster 21st century learning skills while sparking an interest in and positive attitudes about learning.

Past Up & Atom speakers include Miss America 2020 Camille Schrier, former President and CEO of Campbell Soup Denise Morrison and former First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe. The event also features student speakers sharing how the Museum has inspired them to pursue their interests in various fields of science. At the May 2016 breakfast, enthusiastic 10-year-old Claire Hollingsworth, winner of Chopped Junior, shared with the captivated crowd how the Museum's Boost! kitchen has inspired her to become a food scientist!

In its tenure, over $1,000,000 in generous support has been raised through this event. As we reflect on the trajectory of the Museum and its past and future role in young girls’ lives, we know that the Museum’s recent transformation, dynamic guest experience, booming attendance and positive profile in the community would not be possible without the contributions made through Up & Atom.

The 2021 Up & Atom Women’s Leadership Breakfast has been rescheduled for Spring 2022. Contact Director of Sponsorship and Celebrations Sarah Bierlein at sbierlein@smv.org to learn more about the event.
