Science Museum of Virginia Offering Live Virtual Astronomy Shows Starting May 21

May 19, 2020

What:

Life on Earth has changed dramatically from a few months ago, but what hasn’t changed is that the universe, moons, planets, stars and galaxies are still producing awe, inspiration and wonder every day on their trek through the cosmos.

While guests cannot currently visit the Science Museum of Virginia’s 76-foot Dome to enjoy live astronomy presentations, the Museum has found a way to offer social followers the chance to keep up with discoveries, milestones, launches and landings happening in space this summer.

Starting May 21, the Museum’s astronomer, Justin Bartel, will offer a weekly live astronomy show via Facebook. Using the same advanced technology system from the planetarium, the half-hour long virtual program will include the flying-through-space exploration guests experienced in the Dome, just on a smaller screen and from the comfort of their own home.

From planets to asteroids to stars, each program will feature a different topic. Bartel will start the series at our home in the solar system then slowly expand each week to explore more and more distant objects.

When:
The live astronomy shows will air weekly on Thursdays at 2 p.m. beginning May 21. Each program will last approximately 30 minutes.

Who:
Curious-minded guests of all ages are invited to watch. There is no registration required.

Where:
The programs will air on the Museum’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ScienceMuseumofVirginia.

Why:
Ever since the planetarium opened in 1983, exploring space has been among the most popular daily offerings at the Museum. Adults and children alike are in awe of the vastness of the cosmos, and stunning imagery piques the curiosity of all viewers. Ongoing exploration and a constant stream of discoveries gives Museum experts regular exciting information to share with guests.

Having the capability to connect the Museum’s system to Bartel’s at-home setup allows him to continue the Museum’s mission of inspiration no matter where he—or the audience—is located.

How:
The new virtual live astronomy series is made possible thanks to the generous support of Allianz Partners.
