The Commonwealth of Virginia has awarded the construction contract for the Northern Virginia Science Center to Balfour Beatty, a nationally recognized leader in complex infrastructure construction. This milestone allows construction to begin on the new cultural and educational landmark in Loudoun County.
Featuring custom, interactive exhibitions, the Northern Virginia Science Center will integrate education, innovation and culture to serve as a community inspiration hub for all ages. It expands the physical footprint of state-supported museums–which includes the Science Museum of Virginia and the Danville Science Center–making science accessible for all Virginians.
“This innovative project represents an extraordinary investment by and for Virginia,” said Science Museum Chief Wonder Officer RIchard Conti. “It demonstrates the state’s commitment to enriching communities and shaping a brighter future for all Virginians. This is an exciting step forward for this endeavor, and I know Balfour Beatty will be an exceptional partner in making the Northern Virginia Science Center a reality.”
Balfour Beatty joins the Northern Virginia Science Center’s other major design-build partners, HGA and Roto Group, LLC. They broke ground on the 70,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility in late February.
With an anticipated opening in 2027, the Northern Virginia Science Center will set a new standard as a destination for discovery, innovation and hands-on STEM engagement. It will feature five expansive galleries and multiple flexible-use spaces for educational programs and special events. Situated in the Dulles Technology Corridor at Kincora, the Northern Virginia Science Center will back up to 200 acres of parkland and nature trails along the Broad Run Stream valley, providing opportunities for outdoor exploration.
The Northern Virginia Science Center project is a public-private partnership between the Commonwealth of Virginia, Science Museum of Virginia, Loudoun County, Kincora and Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation. The project has received support from Northwest Federal Credit Union as well as numerous businesses, foundations and families across the Commonwealth.
