Fuel Up with New Morning Speaker Series at the Science Museum

October 26, 2023

What: What goes perfectly with coffee to get folks fueled up in the morning? Science! The Science Museum of Virginia’s new in-person speaker series has both. Sunrise Science features experts with interesting STEM-focused jobs who will pour out a little of their expertise, experience and insight into the ways our world is shaped by science.

When: The inaugural Sunrise Science takes place Thursday, Nov. 2.

Doors open at 7:30 a.m. with complementary coffee, and the program runs from 8-9 a.m.

Who: Dr. Rick Spinrad, Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and the 11th NOAA Administrator, will present “An Ocean Apart?” His presentation will offer a look at the interconnectedness of the health of our oceans and our daily lives.

Why: In the United States, 127 million people — or nearly 40% of the population — live in coastal counties. For both residents and tourists alike, coastlines are centers of leisure, recreation and commerce. Ultimately, the ocean is our lifeblood. It provides critical resources, helps distribute heat across our planet, controls weather patterns and has absorbed 90% of the warming that has occurred in recent decades due to increasing greenhouse gasses. Yet, our ocean and coastlines do not have an infinite capacity. If we don’t do our part to keep them healthy, they cannot support our livelihoods and lifestyles.

How: Sunrise Science events are free, but registration is required. Visit smv.org to reserve a spot.
