What are Laser Shows?

Laser Shows are a new program at the Science Museum of Virginia. They are unique light-and-music performances. Colorful beams are projected as shapes, patterns and images on The Dome screen. Visuals are choreographed to music. Laser Shows offer a dynamic, immersive experience that delight and entertain.

How long are the shows?

Laser Shows run 30-60 minutes depending on the program.

Is there accessible seating in The Dome?

Yes. Accessible seating is located at the top of The Dome. It is accessed via Level 1.

Is there an age requirement?

Laser Shows offered during regular operating hours or as part of a family friendly event are open to all ages. For safety reasons, guests cannot arrive late or re-enter The Dome once a Laser Show has started. Before purchasing tickets, be sure all guests in your party are able to sit through the show without leaving. Please also make note of the set list for the Laser Show. Guests should use their own discretion to determine if an artist/song is appropriate for any younger guests.

Standalone, evening Laser Shows have different age requirements. More information about evening Laser shows can be found on those event pages.

Are there assigned seats?

No, guests may sit wherever they like. For sell-out shows, guests will be asked to fill all available seats.

Can I save seats?

We ask that if you are trying to sit with other guests, you wait until everyone has arrived and all enter The Dome at the same time so you can sit together.

Are guests allowed to arrive late and re-enter?

For safety reasons, guests cannot arrive late or re-enter The Dome once a Laser Show has started. Once seated, all guests should remain in The Dome until the end of the Laser Show unless an emergency exit is necessary. Guests who exit The Dome during a Laser Show will not be granted a refund.

Do Laser Shows have bright lights?

Laser Shows include bright, flashing colored beams of light. Lasers may not be suitable or cause discomfort for guests with light sensitivities, sensory concerns or certain pre-existing conditions.

Do Laser Shows have loud music?

The volume of Laser Shows is similar to a music concert. This may not be suitable or cause discomfort for guests with sensitivities, sensory concerns or certain pre-existing conditions. Guests are welcome to wear earplugs if they choose.

How much do Laser Shows cost?

Guests can add a Laser Show to their visit for $5. Members can use Dome passes. If guests do not want to explore the Science Museum before or after the show, a Laser Show only ticket can be purchased for $9.

Evening Laser Shows have a different price structure. Details can be found on those event pages.

How can I purchase tickets?

Tickets can be purchased on the Science Museum’s website or in person at Guest Services, if tickets are still available. Each Laser Show can seat 250 guests. Once 250 tickets have been purchased, the event is sold out.

Can I bring food and drinks into The Dome?

Guests can purchase candy, popcorn and drinks from concessions before the Halloween Spooktacular events on October 26 and 27 only. Concessions will not be open for the October 31 Halloween Spooktacular show.

Food and beverages may be taken into The Dome and consumed during the show. Be sure to leave enough time to get your concession goodies before the start of The Dome show. Dome shows begin promptly at their listed start time, and guests can’t enter late. Once the show starts, all guests should remain seated until the end unless an emergency exit is necessary.

Are the lasers dangerous?

None of the lasers used during the show are positioned in a way that they shine directly at the audience. To ensure guests don’t accidentally have any contact with lasers, guests cannot arrive late or re-enter The Dome once a Laser Show has started.

What is the haze made out of?

Haze machines put a very fine water-based mist into the air. It’s just enough to make the laser beams sufficiently visible, and often audiences don’t even notice it’s there.

Can I visit the Science Museum before or after the Laser Show?

If you have purchased admission to the Science Museum, you may explore the Science Museum before or after the Laser Show. Please note that the Science Museum’s operating hours are 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Are private lasers available for booking?

At this time, we are not booking private Laser Shows. If you’re interested in this offering, please email your contact information to our Special Events team and they will contact you if this offering becomes available.
