What are Laser Shows?

Laser Shows are unique light-and-music performances. Colorful beams are projected as shapes, patterns and images on a screen. Visuals are choreographed to music. Laser Shows offer a dynamic, immersive experience that delight and entertain.

How long are the shows?

Laser Shows run 45-60 minutes depending on the program.

Is there accessible seating in The Dome?

Yes. Accessible seating is located at the top of The Dome. It is accessed via Level 1.

Is there an age requirement?

Evening Laser Show guests must be at least 8 years old. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Per Virginia law, anyone consuming alcohol must be 21 or older.

Are shows family friendly?

Evening Laser Shows are open to guests 8 and older. Please note that some of the artist’s music may refer to adult themes or include adult language. Guests should use their own discretion to determine if an artist is appropriate for any younger guests.

Are there assigned seats?

No, guests may sit wherever they like. For sell-out shows, guests will be asked to fill all available seats.

Can I save seats?

We ask that if you are trying to sit with other guests, you wait until everyone has arrived and all enter The Dome at the same time so you can sit together.

Are guests allowed to arrive late and re-enter?

For safety reasons, guests cannot arrive late or re-enter The Dome once a Laser Show has started. Once seated, all guests should remain in The Dome until the end of the Laser Show unless an emergency exit is necessary. Guests who exit The Dome during a Laser Show will not be granted a refund.

Do Laser Shows have bright lights?

Laser Shows include bright, flashing colored beams of light. Lasers may not be suitable or cause discomfort for guests with light sensitivities, sensory concerns or certain pre-existing conditions.

Do Laser Shows have loud music?

The volume of Laser Shows is similar to a music concert. This may not be suitable or cause discomfort for guests with sensitivities, sensory concerns or certain pre-existing conditions. Guests are welcome to wear earplugs if they choose.

How much do Laser Shows cost?

Evening Laser Shows cost $12.50 for members and $15 for non-members.

Are there any ticket discounts for children, seniors, military or educators?

No, there is only a member discount. All other guests must pay the per ticket price, which reserves one seat in The Dome.

How can I purchase tickets?

Tickets can only be purchased on the Science Museum’s website. All guests, including members, should get their tickets on the Science Museum’s website prior to the event.

Can tickets be purchased at the door?

If there are seats available and the event is not sold out, guests can purchase tickets the evening of the event. The only way to purchase tickets is through the Science Museum’s website so even guests who come to the event without tickets will need to use the website to make their purchase.

How many tickets are available?

Each Laser Show can seat 250 guests. Once 250 tickets have been purchased, the event is sold out.

When do Laser Shows take place?

For evening Laser Shows, there are two showings of the same program on the same night. The shows take place at 6:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.

When do doors open?

  • 5:30 p.m. for the 6:30 p.m. show
  • 7:30 p.m. for the 8:15 p.m. show

Will food and drinks be available for purchase?

There will be candy, popcorn, non-alcoholic beverages and alcoholic beverages for sale before the start of the show. Food and beverages may be taken into The Dome and consumed during the show. Once the show starts, all guests should remain seated until the end unless an emergency exit is necessary.

How many alcoholic beverages may I order at one time?

Guests may order two beverages per person.

Are the lasers dangerous?

None of the lasers used during the show are positioned in a way that they shine directly at the audience. To ensure guests don’t accidentally have any contact with lasers, guests cannot arrive late or re-enter The Dome once a Laser Show has started.

What is the haze made out of?

Haze machines put a very fine water-based mist into the air. It’s just enough to make the laser beams sufficiently visible, and often audiences don’t even notice it’s there.

Can I get a refund if I purchase tickets but then can’t attend?

Tickets are non-refundable, and may not be transferred and resold.

Can I visit the Science Museum before or after the Laser Show?

No, Science Museum exhibitions, labs and makerspaces will all be closed during the evening Laser Shows. Only The Dome, concessions and restrooms will be open for these special events.

Is parking available?

The Science Museum offers free parking in the deck and surrounding surface lots.

Are private lasers available for booking?

At this time, we are not booking private Laser Shows. If you’re interested in this offering, please email your contact information to our Special Events team and they will contact you if this offering becomes available.
