Ghouls just want to have fun!

Get into the Halloween spirit – and take advantage of the chance to wear your costume another time – with a night full of spooky science!

  • See live demos of various curious concoctions as you learn the science of mysterious things. There may be a foaming pumpkin involved!
  • Watch an educator turn regular bubbles into boo bubbles using dry ice.
  • Create your own slithery serpent to take home (for ghostly guests ages five and younger).
  • Make your own paper lantern for trick-or-treating.
  • Discover the secrets of zombie fungus. Seriously. There is a fungus that takes over and controls an ant’s body and then slowly uses the ant to infect the rest colony. Science!

Plus, our friends from the Virginia Section of the American Chemical Society will be at the event offering lots of frighteningly fun chemistry activities. Hint: did you know there’s a ton of chemistry involved in the fabrics that make up Halloween costumes?

Guests can also enjoy live astronomy shows in The Dome at 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. No tickets are required. Each show is open to the first 250 guests.

Family-friendly costumes are encouraged.

Science After Dark admission is $16 for adults; $13.50 for youth (ages 6 – 12) and seniors (ages 60 and older) and $10 for preschool-aged children (ages 3 – 5). Science After Dark admission is free for Museum members, children under 2, educators, military and college students with a valid ID.
