In one of Richmond’s hottest urban corridors, the Science Museum is expanding its community impact as it converts half of its 37-acre campus into public greenspace. The East Green transforms more than five acres of asphalt and underused urban land into a living landscape that will provide a community gathering place and an opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in environmental science. The new greenspace will thrive with over 6,000 native plantings, 45-year-old willow oaks, public art, ecologically supportive water features, and interpretive signage that connects guests to the remarkable science blooming in the space. Complementing and adjoining The Green along Broad Street, the East Green will be free and open to all—inviting not just Science Museum guests, but everyone in the community to gather, explore and unwind.
Step into the vision for the East Green and discover how design and nature come together in a multigenerational greenscape.
Building on the success of The Green, the East Green will continue to demonstrate how urban landscapes can drive meaningful ecological resilience. By restoring habitat, expanding green space, and supporting environmental learning, the East Green addresses urban heat, stormwater runoff and biodiversity loss while improving access to nature for surrounding neighborhoods and hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The project also supports the goals of Richmond 300 and RVA Green 2050, bringing Richmond closer to a future where every resident is within a 10-minute walk of a public park.
Once complete, The Green and East Green will serve as a centralized public park for the Greater Scott’s Addition area, one of the fastest growing, mixed-use neighborhoods in the city with one of the lowest levels of urban tree cover.
Funding for the East Green is being privately raised through philanthropy. Forward-thinking organizations and community members are coming together to help shape the future of natural spaces in Richmond. With an estimated budget of $12M, this transformational project needs the support of visionary donors who believe in creating a greener, more connected future for our community.
"The Science Museum is creating change in our city. The East Green will be a vibrant place where nature, discovery and people come together. The Robins Foundation is proud to support a space that will enrich our community and give back year after year."
