They say you are what you eat…but what you eat might be impacting your immune system faster than you think.
A new study shows that switching diets for just two weeks can significantly change inflammation, immunity and metabolism. Researchers in Tanzania studied 77 healthy men who swapped between traditional African heritage-style and Western-style diets.
The results were fast, measurable and kind of shocking.
Participants who switched to a Western diet saw increased inflammation and weaker immune responses to pathogens. They ate meals that included foods like sausage, white bread, fries, biscuits, ketchup and mayonnaise. Their bodies also activated biological pathways linked to lifestyle diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
Meanwhile, those who switched to a traditional diet from the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania experienced reduced inflammation and improved immune function. That diet emphasized vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains and fermented foods, like okra and boiled plantain with kidney beans. Even adding just a fermented banana drink, called Mbege, showed measurable health benefits.
What’s wild is that some of these positive or negative effects lasted four weeks after the diet change. This suggests your body doesn’t just react to food—it remembers it for a period of time.
