Question Your World: Can Meditation Reduce Pain?
You know that old saying “mind over matter”? Well even science can get involved in that statement and this time it involves meditation!
A recent study has revealed that mindfulness meditation alleviates pain through distinct neural mechanisms, separate from the placebo effect. Researchers conducted trials with 115 healthy participants, exposing them to painful heat stimuli after assigning them to one of four interventions: guided mindfulness meditation, a sham meditation practice involving only deep breathing, a placebo petroleum jelly cream, or listening to an audiobook.
Advanced brain imaging and brain pattern analysis to tease out the different patterns associated with experiencing pain showed that mindfulness meditation significantly reduced both pain intensity and unpleasantness.
This reduction correlated with decreased activity in brain activity patterns associated with how intense the pain is and the emotional experience of pain. In contrast, the placebo cream only influenced brain activity linked to the placebo response and our expectations of pain, without altering the other patterns of activity. These findings suggest that mindfulness meditation engages neural pathways that are different from the placebo effect, showing its potential as a drug-free method for pain management.
The scientists involved emphasized that mindfulness allows individuals to separate pain from the self by reducing communication between brain areas involved in introspection, self-awareness and emotional regulation, essentially helping manage parts of the pain experience without medication.
While further studies need to be done with people who experience chronic pain, this research opens ways for developing effective, accessible pain management strategies utilizing mindfulness practices. As millions endure chronic pain daily, these insights offer hope for improved quality of life through non-pharmacological means.
