Create an optical illusion of a floating wooden platform held together by tension.
Advanced Registration Required
Think you can hold it all together? Put your skills to the test in the The Forge, where you’ll build a wooden platform that looks like it’s magically floating in midair! The secret? It’s all about tension—when the strings are just right, the whole thing suspends belief.
You’ll learn how balance, forces, and a little trick of the eye can turn ordinary materials into an extraordinary illusion. It’s a hands-on challenge that will leave you wondering: is it science… or sorcery? (Spoiler: it’s science!)
This workshop will be held at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on September 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 30.
Forge Workshops are included with Science Museum admission. Advance registration is required for all guests including members. This can be done online when buying your tickets or in person at the Guest Services desk. Please note, Forge Workshops often fill up quickly.
