The Next Generation of Vertical Farming

Humans have been farming for thousands of years. Traditional commercial farming techniques use large tracts of land. In recent years, an innovative type of controlled-environment agriculture has emerged: vertical farming.

A new generation of accessible, modular vertical farms allow food service operations to grow fresh produce and ingredients in a safe, reliable and convenient way. In addition to maximizing land use and expanding food access, vertical farms reduce emissions and conserve water, benefiting both consumers and the planet.

While studying social-entrepreneurship at the University of Virginia, Alexander Olesen co-founded Babylon Micro-Farms Inc. with a fellow student. Based in Richmond, the company has grown into North America's leading provider of distributed micro-farming technology. Now Babylon’s CEO, Olesen has won entrepreneur and professional awards, including being named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. He regularly speaks about climate technology to educate and inspire businesses, communities and consumers to adopt vertical farming practices.
