Engineers who measured the shape of James Webb Space Telescope's mirror segments incorporated the same ideas into a system ophthalmologists use to measure the shape of their patient’s eyes.

Science has advanced so much in recent decades that it’s easy to take it for granted. Like weather forecasting, for example. Today, a five-day weather forecast is as accurate as a one-day forecast was in 1980.
